Some people like to talk. You might know of some people that enjoy hearing the sound of their own voice. You might even be one of them!

I am in danger of being one of those people. In a group setting, I can’t handle silence and will just fill the awkward pause with words – whether or not those words are brilliant or not! Yet, as smart as I sometimes think I am, I am bound to say something silly, uninformed, or unnecessary.

“Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent; with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent.” Prov 17:28

For those of us that are perfectly content being silent and listening to others, give the “talkers” a break and remember that even intelligent people can say silly things. For the talkers among us, remember that just because someone is quiet doesn’t mean they are not intelligent or have nothing to say.

Keeping silent also lets us wait to understand what is being said. So often it is tempting to jump into conversations without knowing all the facts. (i.e. ANY debate or hot topic on Facebook where people are emotionally charged and seldom informed!)

“Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish.” Prov 18:13

Words have meaning, value, and a cost. So, the next time you are deciding whether or not to monolog for 3 hours, or join in a Facebook rant, discern whether or not what you have to say is truthful and worth the time, effort, and attention required of yourself and those listening!
